On Wednesday 15th April 2026, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published ISO 14001:2026, the revised edition of the global Environmental Management System (EMS) standard. The update reflects increasing international and regulatory expectations around climate change resilience, biodiversity protection and environmental performance, while strengthening clarity, accountability and system effectiveness for organisations of all sizes.
Overview
ISO 14001:2026 is the latest revision of the Environmental Management System (EMS) standard, introducing greater emphasis on climate change, biodiversity, environmental performance and leadership accountability while retaining alignment with Annex SL management system standards.
Key Transition Areas
• Context of the organisation – explicit consideration of climate change, pollution and biodiversity.
• Leadership – increased accountability for environmental performance and governance.
• Planning – new structured EMS change management requirements.
• Operations – stronger supplier and contractor environmental controls.
• Performance evaluation – clearer evaluation of EMS effectiveness and environmental outcomes.
Preparing for transition
ISO 14001:2026 represents an evolution of the standard rather than a complete overhaul; however, certified organisations will need to review and update key components of their EMS to ensure ongoing conformity and certification continuity.
MS Certification recommends organisations obtain a copy of the updated standard and begin early transition planning. Our audit and technical teams are available to support clients through gap analysis, transition audits and advisory discussions during the transition period.
